Our ambition : designing a semi-automatic loom for local production


  1. The loom has to be reproducable through open source technical drawings.
  2. The maximal width of the fabric is 10 cm.
  3. The maximum length of the fabric is 500 cm.
  4. Quantity of lengthwise yarns : ????? Maximum thickness of yarns : ????????
  5. Material yarns : ????????? Flexibility of yarns is important.
  6. The OSL needs to be fully automated. The final design needs to provide all necessary parts for it.
  7. If possible we use the open source matrix.

Roadmap :[edit source]

  1. Create a 3D model of the existing last prototype
  2. Start the wiki of the OSL
  3. Search background info.
  4. Document the improvements/changes that are needed to the existing last prototype in association with the experts and their thoughts on the how and what.
  5. Start a new 3D model based on the existing one and implement the improvements.
  6. Presentation of the new model to the experts.
  7. After adjustments and approval : production drawings, Bill Of Materials
  8. Completion of dossier on wiki

  • 18/07/2019 - 21/07/2019 TexChallenge Gent in Timelab : part of this workshop was to design a semi-automatic loom for for local production.
  • DATE????? : last prototype is based on the process of one of the looms shown in this folder: Miat toestellen.zip
  • 13/09/2022 : Bart started working on the project with the ultimate goal : creating a working open source loom according to the specifications based on the existing last prototype with complete dossier.
  • 13/09/2022 - 4/10/2022 : first step : learning the 3d drawing software : Onshape was chosen. "Onshape Free is available to the hobbyist and maker communities free of charge for non-commercial use. It is ideal for personal and open-source projects."
  • 4/10/2022 : first communication Bart with Helena : some background and explanation about the operation of the existing OSL (Open Source Loom) prototype.
  • 11/10/2022 : Bart started to design the last existing prototype in Onshape. Link :3D model OSL prototype from which Bart started.

  • 05/12/2023: Bart starts with implementation of the OSL in Wiki. Communication with Helena about the hows and whats and improvements to the last OSL prototype.
  • 02/01/2024 : Bart starts with adjustment of model. Goal : design a theoretical workable prototype.

Troubles in Paradise[edit source]

  1. Zie document onderzoek inslaggaren : hoe doek van 5 meter lang en 10 cm dik verkrijgen?
    Geweven  band 4,5 cm Dun wolgaren gebruikt 165 cm inslagdraad om 1 cm lengte te weven voor een breedte van 4.5cm. Op een volle klos zit 6000 cm dun wolgaren opgewonden.
    Om een 5 m ( = 500 cm) band te weven is (165 /4.5 ) *10 cm (breedte) * 500 cm nodig = 183 334 cm nodig.
    Dit betekent 183 334 /6000 = 30.6 = 31 bobijnen
