Knotfactory

From timelab

Our current journey together is setting up a Knotfactory in collaboration with Mariasteen vzw and De Kringwinkel Antwerpen guided by Marieke Maertens and supported by VLAIO. Knotfactory is a blueprint for an ethical, circular businessmodel that is local and decentralized. In spring 2022, the knotpot was born. Our little bio composite pots for growing plants are biodegradability as their main function. They represent the cycle of life in a way that is familiar to you. Today we see your roots will not only destroy, but will also connect and heal a broken system. We are blessed and grateful to go on this journey with you and discover our need for de-learning and believe in nature. We will never own you. We met on community ground and we give back to the community, everything we learned from you. In this project, we focus on four different categories: the application, the material, the process, the workspace and the governance.

Tests[edit | edit source]

This platforms allows us to share research on the development of different materials with Japanese Knotweed. As for now, we have 2 different products:

You can find all tests and observations on the specific pages.

Product code[edit | edit source]

As you will see on the test pages of Knotplex and Knotpot, all tests have a specific code. This code shows the recipe and how the product is made. This will help to select which characteristics go with which settings.

Temperature:
Temperature while pressing. Cold pressing is pressing on room temperature. We would put 20°C. Warm pressing would be with a heated press, where we go for max 120°C.

Force:
Force of press, indicated in Tons.

Time:
Pressing time, indicated in minutes.

Matrix:
What type of matrix did you choose? And how much grams did you add? At the moment we experiment with: Hideglue, Rice of Algae protein, casein and potato starch.

Water:
How much (in ml) water did you add? This is helpful for the binding in many cases.

Filler:
We choose to use Japanese Knotweed as filler. Depending on the preferred characteristics of the final product, you can use small of large particles. Lagers ones will give you a stronger part, smaller ones will give you more form flexibility.
